Update on Reported Landslide in Bella Coola Valley: No Impacts to Safety or Travel

Central Coast, BC — The Central Coast Regional District (CCRD), in collaboration with Nuxalk Nation, is providing an update regarding the recently reported landslide in the Bella Coola Valley.

To confirm that there were no impacts following the landslide/avalanche reported on March 18, 2026, Nuxalk Nation has conducted an aerial assessment of the area using a drone. Based on this assessment, there is no indication of damage to any structures or private property. The landslide occurred in Molly’s Canyon, on the north side of the south-facing slope of Nusatsum Mountain. The slide was not in proximity to Highway 20.

At this time, there are no impacts to public safety and no disruptions to travel routes or access throughout the region.
The Bella Coola Valley is a geologically active area, where natural events such as landslides, avalanches, and rockfalls are relatively common. These events can occur without warning, particularly during periods of changing weather, snowmelt, or heavy rainfall. CCRD encourages residents and visitors to remain aware of their surroundings, especially when traveling through mountainous terrain.

As part of public safety awareness, CCRD reminds the public that social media is not monitored for emergency or hazard reporting. If you observe a landslide or other event that may pose a risk to public safety, please report it directly to the Bella Coola RCMP detachment at 250-799-5363 so it can be assessed and responded to appropriately.
No further updates are anticipated on this event unless conditions change.
