Hagensborg Water

Hagensborg Water System Upgrade – Frequently Asked Questions

What is the water system upgrade?

The Hagensborg water system is being upgraded to a groundwater system which provides more consistent quality, requires less treatment, and has lower annual operation and manufacturing costs when compared to surface water.

Why is the water system being replaced?

The current surface water system is aging, and leaking distribution pipes require constant replacement to address pressure issues and water wastage. Also, the system has been on a longstanding Boil Water Notice issued by Vancouver Coastal Health (VCH) and treatment of the source water is needed to ensure the water is safe for consumption.

How is the upgrade being funded?

Funding for the upgrade has come from grants as well as CCRD Reserve Funds.

• Funding secured from Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program – Green Infrastructure / Environmental Quality Stream.

• Grant Funds = $3,785,294

• CCRD Reserve Funds = $1,376,706

• Total Available Funds = $5,162,000

What is drinking water chlorination?

The new Hagensborg water system will be chlorinated in order to prevent microorganisms that may be harmful to human health from being ingested.

Drinking water chlorination is the addition of chlorine to a drinking water system, has been done for over 100 years around North America. Chlorination is the most common type of drinking water disinfection and prevents bacteria, viruses, and other microorganisms that cause disease and immediate illness. Chlorine is effective and continues to keep the water safe as it travels from the treatment plant to the consumer’s tap.

More information about drinking water chlorination can be found on the HealthLinkBC’s website here
